iphone woes
well, it has now been 24 hours. i have been on two separate calls with at&t. the first pushed me through to a hardware tech with apple, who without placing blame, agreed that that at&t was not ready and all the hold up is on their end. not surprised.
at 10:30pm, after being on hold for 30 minutes, i spoke with a customer service rep from at&t at 877-800-3701. she should she expedited my issue and that within three hours i would receive an email saying it was activated.

my iphone hype
it's wearing off a little now. i took some time out to go pick one up this evening. while i did get the phone, a real short line in lady lake, fl, it's still not activated. i got through the activation process pretty quick in itunes. my other phone's sim was unregistered in about 5 minutes. however, i received a message that said "you're activation requires additional time to complete." so here i sit a couple of hours later. still waiting. and until it is activated, it can't be used at all. argh...

Student Life Camp
well, now that student life camp is over and i have had some time to think about the week and all that it did and did not have to offer i'll share my thoughts.
since it was my first experience with student life i had an unadulterated perspective. my thought is that i will compare it waith a camp i am very familiar with and the pros and cons, etc. that camp is the United Methodist Summer Camp in Leesburg, FL. We attended Student Life at Covenant College on Lookout Mtn, Ga. After the first day and really after the week, i would consider this type of camp much more of a conference than a camp. I felt that it lacked a true "camp" experience, like what takes place in Leesburg. However, as a good conference it's worship times were excellently put together, especially to include it's audience, 700 teenagers. While there were some technological failures (of which the learning comes from expereince)such as batteries dying on mics while they are in use, missing video cues from the speaker, and forgetting to advance slides early enough during the msuic; the services were complete. They contained video, annoucnements, transitional video between different worship acts, live drama, the speaker Tony Nolan, worship leaders Spur 58, lighting, props, the times were fluid, they included games, and each service in some way get the crowd involved in the worship expereince. While the quality of speakers and musicians is just as good in Leesburg, they are not the big names, but they are just as good. Howver, the camp in Leesburg could learn from what ttok place in this area. Not that what they do is bad, but in some ways it could be more complete.
SL (used from now on) also handed out a magazine (or handbook) to each camper. This handbook contained the curriculum notes for the week for worship, family groups, and quiet times. It also contained othe rinteresting facts about teenage life, interviews with bands and speakers, and ads for teen bibles and other SL events. There is deffinitely some self-promo stuff going on there. However the handbook was a really neat tool for the campers to have and it gives them a way to bring what they recieved back home with them once they left camp. Another good thing.
The cmap also was in great support of the youth pastors that were there with their groups. The youth pastors were not given any responsibility other than to be present and hang out with their students. It truly gave me an oportunity to get to know some of our students on a depper level and develop some relationships i hadn't had a chane to with others. We had a meeting each day with the other youth pastors to share and pray together including one afternoon in which we prayed over the worship space, prior to the students coming in.
Alongside of those things there were a few things i didn't like or wished would have been different. The first and the biggest things was the lack of interaction between campers and the SL Camp Staff. The only times the staff interacted was during worship and at recreation. Now of course with worship they are on stage and at the sound booth. it was more of you saw them there. at rec they were running the show and the family group leaders (adults from the churches) were the ones actually involved with the students. The Staff did not lead family groups either. At meals you saw them, but rarely saw them with people other than different Staff members. To me this was disappointing and it is an area i feel that the camp in Leesburg does an excellent job at. The counselors in Leesburg are given the primary responsibility of spending time with campers. If they are not, unless they have other responisbilities, they have not fulfilled their duties. It is what makes the camp so sucessfull. The relationships that the students build with the counselors is primary to the communicating the gospel message to the campers that come. But, what do my students know about the SL staff? I asked some of them. their relationships were limited to names an what color team they were on that week.
While registration went very smoothly the day we arrived at SL with a group of 54, there were a few things we needed to return for the next day. One of these were key cards to get into the buildings after 11pm. We were supposed to pick these up fromt he college staff (not camp staff) and they were not aware they we were supposed to recieve one, much less two. After returning to the SL office, the two young ladies that I spoke with, while polite, were not sure what to do about it.
I was also disappointed with SL not having any medical assistance on staff. Now, i have been in youth minstry for 11 years, and with any other trip i would be prepared to take care of medical issues. But when each student is paying top dollar to attend a camp, you would expect for the camp to have some sort of medical assistance. However, there isn't. When one of girls got hurt and we needed to go to the hospital, there was no one available to help. The college had a nurse on staff, but she was not allowed to work with SL and SL was not allowed to provide any transportation. With the help of another youth pastor there, we did get her to the hospital. Now, what if this happened during Rec or during another time that i wasn't available. Who would be responsible to help? Now, yes, i did know about this issue ahead of time and in fact commented to our summer intern that it concerned me.
So, there are some immediate thoughts about the camp after my first expereince. All in all it was a good week. I did disagree with some of Tony's approaches in worship, but not with what he was sharing. There were certainly some good things that happened in the life of our students; lives change, relationships started, prayer for each other, new walks with Christ. God will always be working in us not matter what is going on.

google's free 411 service
i am so excited about this new service from google. free and i mean totally free 411 calls from your cell phone. free.
"To try this service, just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone.
Using this service, you can:
* search for a local business by name or category.
You can say "Giovanni's Pizzeria" or just "pizza".
* get connected to the business, free of charge.
* get the details by SMS if you’re using a mobile phone.
Just say "text message".
And it's free. Google doesn’t charge you a thing for the call or for connecting you to the business. Regular phone charges may apply, based on your telephone service provider."
taken straight from google's page. it really doesn't get better than this. i am so tired of 411 on my cell, listening to ads for the other free service or paying way too much. this has just made it's own entry in my cell phone. and it will text you the number. now that's awesome.

New Gears Maps "Hidden Fronts" REVIEWED
Epic wanted to release these maps for free. Microsoft won't allow it until September. However, IGN said that even if you are thinking about it to go ahead and buy. They are that good. Thought about waiting to download them until the are free just to support Epic. I haven't decided whether or not to purchase them yet. I understand selling content for games. I don't understand ripping people off with it, like EA. However if a company like Epic wants to give content away for free. Shouldn't they be allowed to?

the glorious unseen

on august 8th, 9th, and 10th, the glorious unseen will be joining us for outpouring. i am so excited to have this group come down. their album with tooth and nail will just be coming out. it will be a very exciting time for them and i am glad that our youth ministry will get to share in that.
however, the thing i am most excited about is the fact that, ben, had asked if they could hang out with the group in our first communications together. in my opinion that speaks very loudly to me. the willingness that they have to be a part of the ministry that will be taking place outside of their opportunities to lead us in worship is amazing.

glue boys

what a great resource! we are using this video tonight as we have begun a series on social justice. the video is eye opening and very revealing about what is happening to children in other lands and yet we have the ability to impact both positively and negatively. we are called to watch over and take care of those who are being oppressed in the world. education is the first step. what's your next?
find out more about the glue boys movie.
the largest oak

finally we visited the one of largest oaks in florida, so lake griffin state park claims. it is thought to be about 300 years old. it is a big tree. while the park is a nice place to pic nic and maybe a nice camping stop, there is little else to offer. but the peace of quiet may be worth it.

two high school graduates delay college for missions

Molly McEntire and Ashley Oetinger delayed going to college in the fall of 2006 to answer their call into missions. from august 28th through november 26th they worked in Kenya serving at the norocco academy and a korean methodist mission there in Kenya. they also spent time at the new life orphange and the beacon of hope, which is a center for women infected or affected with HIV/AIDS.
working in youth ministry myself, i find it an amazing thing when high school students are ready, prepared, and take action based on the call God has placed in their life. as the article continues, they raised the own funding and support to make this happen.
too often teenagers feel and sometimes are led to believe that they don't have the ability to make a difference. sometimes we feel like Africa is so far away, what could we possibly do here to help.
yet, here is a story of two young women who were called to make a difference and were able to go share God's love with people world's away.
more and more stories like this need to come to forefront of todays news.

now for the solution
after all of the problems with xbox customer service, i decided to cancel the repair. now when i called customer service and shared that i was cancelling the repair, because i felt that i was treated below standards, the made anew offer. after all of the confusion with them not sending a pre-paid shipping box, they told me that they would now be willing to send the box. what! why wait for me to cancel? they also offered a lower discount on the repair fee (the old one was out of warranty, argh...)
however, i decided to just go a buy a new core system and purchase a 2 year extended warranty with it. that guarantees that over the new couple of years, when it does break and i am sure it will, that i can exchange it for a new one that same day. it also means that i have the most up to date hardware, including a different and quieter dvd drive, and a different power supply. not sure what the latter is because of...

the best heroes yet
if you are not aware, heroes is a tv show on nbc that's story continues week to week and is unfolded with each episode, much like 24. the show is formed around the idea of, "what if we discovered humans who had superpowers?" it could be likened to a live action comic book. in fact stan lee creator of characters such as spider man, had a cameo last week.
last night's episode 17 has been the best of the season. most of the episodes leave you with many more questions than answers and you almost feel as though there is no climax. it is not your traditional cliffhanger ending, but you are left wanting more, just unsure that you know anything more than previously.
last night questions were answered, much of the backstory was told, we found out the truth about bennet, claire, the haitian, we found out more about primatech papers, and saw some well done special effects for a television show.
i applaud the efforts of this show. it took a risk entering the tv market this and has been successful at creating a world of superheroes.

how wide spread is the 360 problem?
according to gigagamez, highly. of course this report is due to a google search, as they discuss, but it does show a larger number of 360's needing repairs.
Search “defective 360″: 2810 returns
Search “defective PS3″: 1570 returns
Search “defective Wii”: 931 returns
with all of the problems being reported, we can assume that it is a larger problem than with the other consoles. it now after 1 and 1/2 years, is well known about. continually , we also hear about the problems with customer service. you can read about this from loyal fan who returned 7 machines,
and even at the xbox forums.
it is a shame that such a "good" product with xbox live, which is simply the best in the business, would have such a high failure rates with hardware. while Microsoft claims it is 3-5%, others have claimed that it is much higher between 30-50%.

further adventures of xbox 360 customer service
so, a week later, i still have not received a box to ship my 360 back. i have already paid the fee to have it repaired. so i call customer service to ask when my shipping box will arrive. although i was told one was on its way, today i was told it was my responsibility and they are waiting for it.
after requesting a supervisor, i asked if they would follow up with the previous representative, who was also a "supervisor" (requested because i couldn't understand the rep i was speaking with) on the mistake, because they told me i would receive the box in 3-5 days. the response was "our policy is that we do not send out boxes for repairs out of warranty." this was repeated when i asked again.
so not only was this mistake made and slowing the process, they refused to do any follow up with their employees who made the mistake.

xbox 360 failure; again
this is the second time my 360 will go in for repairs. i got mine pre-ordered originally. about 6 months down the line it failed. microsoft repaired it with no problem. now when i received it at about 4 weeks later, i called to buy the "extended warranty," but i was told that i couldn't because it had already been the 30 day time to purchase although i didn't even have it at that time. that was 6 months from the original purchase.
about 7 months now from that repair, it again is flashing the three red lights of death. oddly enough failing at about the same time frame as the first time. now, don't be confused by the recent news articles of xbox extending the warranties by a year. i must have misread this because it simply meant that you have a year from the original purchase date, not an extended year. this means that my console and moicrosoft's repairs 7 months ago have no coverage. this requires me to pay for repairs on a piece of hardware that's life span is currently no longer than 7 months.
to top it off, the woman i spoke with was very difficult to understand. she was also having trouble explaining anything to me, putting me on hold frequently. i began asking for a supervisor. every time, the same woman got on the phone with a new statement. i asked again. after the 5th request and now being offered a 25% discount a supervisor came on the phone. she suggested i schedule a call back with repairs, because there might be an outstanding issue. i asked if an "outstanding issue" would come with repairs then at no cost. one would think so. however, when she came back, i was told i would still need to pay for the repair even if there was an "outstanding issue" with my xbox. then, why would i wait for a call back? if i still have to pay...
from what you read online and even at the xbox forums, this is happening frequently. on two 360's the failure rate is 100%.

The 360's failure rates are bad enough
The games a system plays are only half the story of why we buy and love this console over that one. The very act of owning a console is made up of many things: everything from how well the stock controller works to how the company deals with us if/when the system has an issue. When it comes to customer service, Microsoft is failing miserably.

kings of bling
this is the hottest new hip hop group to hit the airwaves. their styles are fresh, the rhymes dope, and the beats, oh the beats... original. straight from the 321 i give you "the kings of bling."
power tips to windows vista
"Disable UAC: Roast me over the hot, user-specific coals if you want for this one, but Vista's annoying "Windows needs your permission to continue" dialogs are nothing short of a total nuisance during your PC's initial setup, especially since they appear every time you try to install software. Here's how to disable User Account Control to install your favorite proggies in peace. Should you turn it back on when you're done? Well sure. It is a big part of Vista's new security strategy. But you know what you're doing, so I trust you'll make the right decision either way."
this along with many other tips i agree with fully. the uac is an annoying popup that continues to warn you about everything you do on a vista machine. now, it serves it's purpose, but it gets annoying to know that you are using your mouse.
